Happy Eastern and Ishtar Zumans

Holidays are for circling back home, revisiting memories that bring us comfort.

It’s easy to get buried in the past
When you try to make a good thing last.

Resurrecting all the days that used to be…

Walk with me on this new day dawning

The inauguration of Joe Biden as the 46th president of the United States at on Wednesday, January 20, 2021, will mark the commencement of the four-year term of Joe Biden as president and Kamala Harris as vice president.

It feels kind of like the first time electricity was introduced to rural America….

I Was Trying to Describe You to Someone

Richard Brautigan

I was trying to describe you to someone a few days ago. You don’t look like any girl I’ve ever seen before.

I couldn’t say “Well she looks just like Jane Fonda, except that she’s got red hair, and her mouth is different and of course, she’s not a movie star…”

I couldn’t say that because you don’t look like Jane Fonda at all.

I finally ended up describing you as a movie I saw when I was a child in Tacoma Washington. I guess I saw it in 1941 or 42, somewhere in there. I think I was seven, or eight, or six.

It was a movie about rural electrification, a perfect 1930’s New Deal morality kind of movie to show kids. The movie was about farmers living in the country without electricity. They had to use lanterns to see by at night, for sewing and reading, and they didn’t have any appliances like toasters or washing machines, and they couldn’t listen to the radio. They built a dam with big electric generators and they put poles across the countryside and strung wire over fields and pastures.

There was an incredible heroic dimension that came from the simple putting up of poles for the wires to travel along. They looked ancient and modern at the same time.

Then the movie showed electricity like a young Greek god, coming to the farmer to take away forever the dark ways of his life. Suddenly, religiously, with the throwing of a switch, the farmer had electric lights to see by when he milked his cows in the early black winter mornings. The farmer’s family got to listen to the radio and have a toaster and lots of bright lights to sew dresses and read the newspaper by.

It was really a fantastic movie and excited me like listening to the Star Spangled Banner, or seeing photographs of President Roosevelt, or hearing him on the radio “… the President of the United States… “

I wanted electricity to go everywhere in the world. I wanted all the farmers in the world to be able to listen to President Roosevelt on the radio….

And that’s how you look to me.

Lead us into the light Joe….

Old times were good times

Hard to even think of you today. Hard to believe I almost forgot, but there’s a good reason if you bear with me.

Had to be reminded by a friend that six years ago you left us in silence…. slipped away before dawn, probably when you were thinking of Peggy’s red dress, and the German beer you liked to drink made by monks, and Catman’s blue vampire costume and Lazslo’s drunken orange shoes and counting comets in the sky, stretched out in a lawn chair in Sharon’s back yard.

Maybe dream-like visions were coming to you – in your peaceful slumber – of never-ending waves finally reaching a far shore.

Maybe you climbed to the top of Sugar Mountain in the little car you named Stargazer. Maybe you found the place where you could forgive and be forgiven.

Maybe you tried to reach us from the other side, tried to touch us as we wept in corners of rooms, obsessed about your death, fighting over your love. Maybe you tried to say all the lies came from being afraid to lose any one of us. We are only human and so very fragile, you might have whispered in the darkness that last night.

Maybe you could hardly keep from laughing as you slipped away, just as spring was upon us, remembering the extended version of “Ordinary People,” with you on stage and Albert rocking back and forth like a wild man on guitar.

I could go on and on but you know what’s happening here, a global pandemic. So much has changed, so much of us has changed in such a few, short years. It would be good to hear your thoughts on this apocalyptic matter. Some of us are hoping that as a quantum physicist you might be able to send us a cure. Pull some strings in the universal consciousness….

As for Neil, don’t even get me started. No one’s waiting for the archives anymore, I can tell you that much.

There is much to discuss in telephone conversations that last long into the night. We feel so very alone right now. And we know how you love to talk and talk.

When the light of time is on us

Instead of cursing the darkness
Light a candle for where we’re going
There’s something ahead, worth fighting for

When the light of time is on us
You will see our moment come
And the living soul inside will carry on

It’s a chance to give new meaning to every move we make
In the cavern, in the cave, where we come from

When the light of dawn is on us
We will see what we can be
And the ancient ones can sleep an easy sleep
In the hallways of the ages, on the road to history
What we do now will always be with us

Instead of cursing the darkness
Light a candle for where we’re going
There’s something ahead, worth looking for

Light a candle in the darkness
So others might see ahead
Light a candle in the darkness, when you go.
